I have seen some people mention that on Windows 8.1 you don't really need to install a ant-virus program because the default one is good enough. Is that true? If so, what is the default program called? And will that install on its own through Windows Update, or do I have to go download it separtely?

Also this isn't really a new questions, but I currently use COMODO firewall on my Windows 7 pc. I use a router to access the internet. Do I really need a separate firewall program? If so, do you have any suggestions?

They are probably referring to Microsoft Security Essentials. Not sure if its installed by default into windows 8.1.

Anti-Malwarebyte is a highly recommended anti-malware software. Not too sure about firewalls.

The default program is Microsoft Security Essentials. It's pretty good and will cover pretty much all you need. It'll update through Windows Update so you don't have to worry about that.

Microsoft started recommending using an another AV in tandem with MSE. That said, I only use MSE with the occasional Malwarebytes scan and I'm pretty good.

Also, nothing is as effective as Common Sense^^TM
