Is it worth buying a more expensive motherboard to get 1866 RAM (same CAS) for a gaming machine or should I save my money and get a cheaper motherboard with 1600 RAM

Unless you are using an APU, 1600MHz will be absolutely fine in almost every application. Here is Linus' video on it, and an article that says more or less the same.
